Technological relations

Software: sites that used an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) or Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software system had 41% higher level of present knowledge arte-facts. The rate of conversion to updated knowledge artefacts however was signifi-cantly lower in the intangible operations and Economic development, and was only higher in Environmental preservation. At 69.60%, the performance in sites that used such software was 30% higher compared to sites that do not use ERP or CRM (Table 6 10).

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


Several participants used the text option to provide the name of the ERP or CRM system they used. These were associated to the increases in knowledge artefacts and performance, and are shown in Table 6 11.

Four participating sites used internally created ERPs or CRMs, achieving an overall performance of 65.63%. The main funding stream for the four sites using these internally created systems was government funding (51.25%). 42 participating sites used ERPs or CRMs created by commercial providers instead; in these sites the knowledge artefact presence, updating rate, and performance (78.52%) were all high-er. The main income stream for sites using commercially created systems was self-generated income (54.54%). Sites using internally developed Enterprise or Customer management systems might be required to do so by their parent or local government organisation but had a 20% lower increase in performance.

 
Regarding other software systems, the presence of software as knowledge ar-tefacts generally related to increase in other present and updated knowledge artefacts, and increase in performance (Table 6 12).

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Presence of software in Cultural ed-ucation, Social Participation, and Economic development related to substantial increase in presence of knowledge artefacts in their own objective and all other three objectives too. Software presence in Social participation increased presence in its own objective to 65.56% and overall performance to 56.78%. In Economic develop-ment it increased the overall presence to 54.65% Very high levels of updating were observed in the same two objectives, and overall, in relation to software presence. 


Software use related to very high performance in all four objectives. In Social participation the performance was 82.08% (52% increase), in Economic development 82.69% (53% increase) and in Cultural education 80.65% (increase of 50%). In the Environmental preservation objective, software also related to significant increase in performance, with a reduction in knowledge artefacts. This perhaps is a useful reduc-tion, as comprehensive collections management software might be replacing a whole assortment of other physical or digital knowledge artefacts. Overall, the presence of specialist software had the largest positive relation to knowledge artefacts and to per-formance for Social participation and Economic development, compared to any other demographic examined in this research.

So far, we’ve seen the relation of present and updated knowledge artefacts with performance. The presence and updating characteristics are connected. Can knowledge artefacts be updated if they are not present? In general, no, with the ex-ception being provided by the definition used for updated knowledge artefacts; updated or sourced in the past 12 months. Sourcing is the third characteristic being exam-ined and is connected to both presence and updating. The relation of sourcing, and by extension accessing, knowledge artefacts, with performance is investigated next.
